Quarterly, we’ll shine the spotlight on a DOC employee. We’ll ask why they got into dentistry as well as other fun questions that will allow our patients to get to know their dental care team better.

I always knew I wanted to go into medicine but wasn’t interested in dentistry until college. Because my sister is a dental hygienist, I was familiar with the dentistry field, but thought it was gross. I happened to be at my dentist for an appointment and decided to ask if I could shadow him for my internship, required as part of my biology degree. There I observed a variety of dental procedures, learned how to duplicate x-rays and assisted with other front office procedures. But the best part of the experience was watching the dentist interact with the patients. I then realized that dentistry is a lot more than fixing teeth. It involves building a relationship with your patients and, in many cases, boosts a person’s confidence just by restoring their smile. I found all of these things interesting and it was a definite factor on my decision to pursue dentistry.

Which super power would you like to have and why?
I’m practical so I chose teleportation. Imagine if you could save time between home and work, you wouldn’t have to sit in traffic, it would be beneficial even to do your laundry. It’s something you can use all the time.

What is one thing most people do not know about you?
My whole family is into Jiu Jitsu.

Where would you go in a time machine and why?
I’d love to go back to medieval times and visit ancient castles. However I’d be pretty afraid of diseases.

Other than food and water, what three items would you want on a deserted island?

  1. Chapstick. It’s like a security blanket. If I didn’t have it, I’d chew on my lips!
  2. A blanket.
  3. My glasses. I’m blind as a bat.

Dr. Marti has two children, a boy and a girl, and one on the way, another boy due on September 20th.
What’s the most rewarding part of being a parent?
My husband and I try to raise our children to do right and be good. When you see them being compassionate to others, we know we’re doing something right.

Who’s the one celebrity that would give your husband some competition?
Chris Helmsworth. He plays Thor in The Avengers
