As a family-owned company, our culture cherishes that which is most important in life, our families. Dr. John Walsh founded Dentistry of the Carolinas in 1992 and since that time five of his children and in-laws have come to work for him. In celebration of Father’s Day, we asked a few of our doctors to share their thoughts on fatherhood.

We also asked the family of Dr. Walsh to share their experiences in working day in and day out for their father. Dr. Walsh’s tribute will be posted soon. We’ve already heard from Andrew Hauschka, DDS. Dr. Hauschka, be sure to read his post. This time Benjamin Schuyler, DMD, reflects on his father, Walter Buckley Johnson Schuyler Jr, MD, who lives in Brunswick, Maine. Dr. Schuyler works in our South Charlotte office. His clinical interests are Dental Surgery, Oral Medicine, Sports Dentistry, Esthetic Restorative Dentistry.

What is a funny story you can share about your dad?

Our lake condo in Greenville, Maine was on a golf course. After a big ice storm the course was covered with a thick layer of ice and my dad took my brother and me out to go sledding. My father, however, didn’t bring a sled. Instead my father decided to wear a pair of ice skates and try to skate down the hill on the 7th hole fairway. On the first run down the hill my father’s skate hit a rock and he went for a tumble. My father did break his thumb but said it was a hell of a ride while it lasted. My dad never tried skate-sledding again though.

What is the best memory you have about your dad?

It’s tough to think of a bad memory of my father. I guess the best set of memories would be at Moosehead Lake either taking rides on our boat or foot races up Mt. Kineo.

What is one thing most people do not know about your father?
My dad used to be a wicked good gamer but now he is more into sailing
