Okay, let’s be honest – World Oral Health Day is not likely to rock your radar – probably hovering just above National Kazoo Day and Bubble Bath Day (yes, those are both real). But maybe it should be. The truth is a healthy body starts with a healthy mouth. Think about it – what you put into your mouth and how you care for your mouth plays a major part in your overall physical health.

Did you know that your dentist can detect more than 120 different medical conditions, some life-threatening, in their early stages? A large percentage of health conditions often present oral symptoms like bleeding or swollen gums, ulcers, bad breath, dry mouth and many other unusual changes in the oral cavity. While regular dental check-ups are no substitute for a visit to the doctor, they can reveal a surprising amount of information about your overall health.

This year, Sunday, March 20 is World Oral Health Day. Let’s all celebrate by recommitting to maintaining great oral health and overall health. It’s never too late or too early to start proper oral health habits:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a good quality fluoride toothpaste that’s been approved by the American Dental Association.
  • Floss daily to remove the small bits of trapped food that lead to bacteria, tooth decay and cavities.
  • Use an alcohol-free, fluorinated mouth wash daily.
  • Limit sweets and high-sugar foods that increase the chance of tooth decay.
  • Keep regular dental appointments (usually every six months) to have your teeth cleaned and examined.
  • Instill good oral habits in children for a lifetime of healthy mouths and healthy bodies.

Having a bright clean smile and fresh breath gives you confidence and makes a powerful statement to others about your level of self-respect and self-worth. It all starts with good oral health. Have a wonderful World Oral Health Day and remember we are always here to help care for you.
