CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Aug. 4, 2016 – In response to recent news reports that question the efficacy of flossing, Dentistry of the Carolinas continues to recommend daily flossing and has issued the following statement:

Dentistry of the Carolinas recommends maintaining good oral health with daily flossing, as well as brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and visiting the dentist regularly. Flossing is an essential part of your dental care by helping clean between teeth to remove plaque from areas where a toothbrush can’t reach.

According to Clark Hammock, DMD, P.A., executive vice president/C.B.O. of Dentistry of the Carolinas, “The basis of the news reports highlights the lack of scientific evidence supporting the need for flossing because of insufficient studies linking a benefit to flossing. There are no great scientifically derived, controlled studies of flossing because the mechanics of flossing is so variable. Most studies in medicine are controlled in a lab setting, or you give one group of patients a pill and the other a placebo, which are easily measurable. As for flossing, it’s very difficult to derive a controlled experiment because we all floss differently. The benefits of an effective flossing technique still by far outweigh the risks of not flossing at all.”
